I dropped into Lawfield Trout Fishery last Wednesday to introduce www.scottishfisheries.com to owner Billy McFerren. What I got was a very friendly welcome indeed. A meeting that should have taken about an hour ran into three hours as we swapped fishing stories and the history of Lawfield. Billy has run Lawfield from 1989 and has built up a steady group of repeat anglers. Judging by the reception they all received from Billy, I am sure he considers them more as friends rather than customers.
The Fly Only Loch is 5 acres in size with an average depth of 8 feet. Even in the depths of Autumn and Winter fish can often be caught using dry flies. With its weed beds, 8 feet average depth, surrounding trees and open country side there is an abundance of natural feeding for the trout which helps keep them in pristine condition. The fishery is well stocked with hard fighting rainbows, browns, blues, tiger and brook trout ranging from 2 lb average to well into double figures. Stocking policy at Lawfield Trout Fishery is simple, Billy keeps meticulous records of what has been taken out and replaces them plus a few to cover for any fish lost due to natural wastage. In recent years Catch and Release has become more prominent and Billy has no problem with this as long as the rules are obeyed. Disabled anglers are also made welcome. An area just outside the lodge on the Fly only loch is maintained and reserved for disabled anglers although it can be fished by anyone providing no disabled anglers are present.
Lawfield Trout Fishery also has a bait pond which Billy refers to as the Family Pond. It offers the visiting angler the opportunity to bring their children or grand children with them and introduce them to the wonderful world of angling.
The smell from the wood burning stove as you approach the Fishing lodge is a scent from heaven and offers the angler a well earned break during the colder spells in the winter. There is a small amount of tackle for sale, Flies consumables etc. Hot/cold drinks and snacks are available along with a comfortable seating area for anglers to enjoy their lunch. Billy offers a warm friendly welcome whether you are a new visitor or a seasoned veteran. There is both male and female toilet facilities which are kept spotless and are the real McCoy, not the chemical variety found at some fisheries. If you have never fished Lawfield Trout Fishery before what are you waiting for, a warm welcome awaits you along with beautiful surroundings and quality fish.
